Rio+20: Mountain Pavilion is now open
Showcasing posters and illustrations, Mountain Pavilion opened its doors today, on Rio de Janeiro’s Athlete’s Park, within the Rio+20 Summit activities.
The pavilion’s first visitors were mostly kids along with their school teachers, who expressed their admiration for the mountain’s natural riches and how they are connected to the population and their lives and cultures. All of these can be seen in the posters and illustrations that are displayed permanently on the pavilion.
The first official activity of the pavilion will be “Investment in Mountains: Opportunities and Challenges”, which aims to discuss their potential and establish a frame to drive investments to mountain zones. The activity is organized by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and will cover topics such as extractive industries, renewable energies and tourism. There will also be discussions on previous experiences on regions such as the Alps, the Himalayas and Brazil.
Other important activities for the first date will be a meeting to address of Genre and Mountains Sustainable Development on the North America Agenda, by the Utah Valley University. And the “Payment for Environmental Services schemes under debate: a tool for natural ecosystems conservation or to increase income and improve well being of rural populations?” panel.
Mountain Pavilion is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), CONDESAN, the Italian Development Cooperation and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat.
