Dear Friends,
We are happy to inform you that International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD and Utrecht University (the Netherlands) have for the first time in the Himalayas used Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to monitor the status of a debris covered glaciers in the Langtang valley in Nepal. The study was partially supported by ICIMOD Innovation Fund. The research findings, which have been published in the journal Remote Sensing of Environment, indicate that the glacier is in poor condition; it is hardly moving anymore and thinning slowly but gradually. The findings also reveal, in unprecedented detail, that supra-glacial lakes and ice cliffs play a prominent role in accelerating the melt rate of debris-covered glaciers. It is concluded that such innovative technology could bring tremendous possibilities in the study of inaccessible glaciers. The article ‘High-resolution monitoring of Himalayan glacier dynamics using unmanned aerial vehicles’ can be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2014.04.025
Also attached is the pdf of the same paper.
We’re also sharing a documentary, ‘Monitoring Himalayan Glaciers’ that presents the findings of an innovative research conducted in the Nepal Himalayas. A team of international experts tries to understand the Himalayan water cycle using high-altitude measurements of snow and rain and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over debris-covered glaciers. The study was conducted by Utrecht University, ICIMOD and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), and was partially supported by ICIMOD Innovation Fund. The video is now available on ICIMOD website at http://www.icimod.org/?q=13588
